Access

Scottish Dance Theatre aims to have a positive social impact in the areas of access and inclusion within dance. We endeavour to provide a website and print that will give all users as rich an experience as possible.

Copies of material are produced in large print, audio and Braille. Please contact our Marketing team if you wish to receive information in alternative formats. When the company is on tour we try to make sure that we have large print and audio copies of our programme available, you just need to ask venue staff.  We also have copies of any scripts or text used in the shows available.

SDT aims to make performances as accessible as possible. We are increasing our audio described performances and ensuring our Interactive performances are BSL interpreted.

SDT is unique in that it has a Dance Agent for Change  who amongst many other things provides the company with the knowledge to fully support the needs of everyone who works or trains with the company. Caroline Bowditch guides the company on disability equality and diversity, making sure that access requirements are met as far as is possible.

If you experience any difficulties in accessing information on our website or print, or have trouble using any aspect of the website or print, please contact us and let us know.

Website Accessibility

SDT is committed to providing a website that will give all users of varying abilities and technology as rich an experience as possible. To achieve this, our website has been designed and built to meet level AA conformance guidelines within W3C WAI guidelines. Select this link for more information on AA.

This statement outlines what steps we have taken to accommodate the needs of our users.

Navigation

A key feature of this site is that users who are unable to use a mouse, can easily navigate using the keyboard or screen readers. This website uses:

A sensible tab order so that a user can tab through the site in a logical order. Navigation code that will always sit below the content. This means that for people using screen readers, for example, the navigation won't be read out at the start of every single page you visit. Calls-to-action at the end of copy will also enable easy movement around the site, and direct visitors to the next most appropriate page or step.

Additional features of this site include:

Scalable text - all copy can be increased in size by holding down the ctrl key and + (to enlarge text) or ctrl and – to reduce text size. Find out more about the controls for different browsers. Style sheets - users can incorporate their own stylesheets, making the site flexible and adaptable for users with specific needs e.g background or text colour. Links make sense out of context – all links have titles to aid understanding, and 'click here' is not written in the copy. The HTML we produce conforms to the standard: XHTML 1.0 Transitional. Flash animation and javascript will never be used for critical information. Forms - always have default values to help users understand what information to enter, and to be understandable by screen readers. Headers - correct header structure so a user will know where in the site they are at any time, and crucially, will know how to move to another part of the site.
